ICC keen to install IPL model in USA

Jay Mir, the CEO of American Sports and Entertainment Group. Inc is coming up with a mega-show this October. APL or American Premier League is an idea that will envelop the American nation in the mentioned month. However, APL is unsanctioned by ICC and it believes that the Rebel American League will cause a lot of nuisance.

To combat the march of APL, I.S Bindra, Principal Advisor of ICC has advised US officials to explore a model akin to the IPL and set up a tournament in America. Such a model will succor from the fever of T20 cricket and certainly amass funds required for the development of cricket in America. Presently, only the South Asian contingent seems interested in the fame.

Mr. Bindra believes that regulating a rebellious enterprise would not be as successful as finding a plausible alternative to curb its growth. He cited the example of India where ICC has virtually nipped Rebel League ICL in the budding stage by sponsoring IPL (already an illustrious league within an year of its formation).

APL has already recruited the services of former legend Sir Richard Hadlee as an executive consultant. It has also confirmed Richie Richardson for the post of Chief recruiter and Premium West Indies coach. All these are efforts to gain credibility as also to boost the set-up even further.

The American Rebel League will hold its matches at the Staten Island in New York and it has already converted a minor league stadium into a cricket stadium. Statue of Liberty and River Hudson would lord over the beautiful stadium.

New Zealand Cricket has taken Sir Richard Hadlee’s APL connection with a pinch of salt. It is learnt that ICC and ECB have already shown resentment towards yet another unsanctioned league. (Read Rebel League-ICL). Cricket Australia is not going to be an APL zealot anyways. This casts a dubious shadow over the brainchild of Jay Mir.

To gain some credibility, Jay Mir, CEO of American Sports and Entertainment Group. Inc. has appointed Richie Richardson as the chief recruiter and Sir Richard Hadlee as the Executive consultant. His designation as the board member might give a semblance of respectability to yet another rebel league but it would still have to fight many cases with the various country cricketing councils.

Jay Mir is ferociously recruiting ostracized players of the day and also those past their prime. The idea is to create another mega circus of cricket. Staten Island, NY, might not be abuzz yet but the South Asian contingent has certainly woken up to the game. Already, a 10000-seater baseball-converted stadium is being created.

NZC chief executive feels that a player and ambassador of Hadlee’s caliber should not have got aligned to a rebel outfit yet this is the way of the world and even Hadlee has a “ life to lead” he feels.

Despite what the cricket boards have to say, Jay Mir might be able to bring some sanity into the scene as the man is a talented entrepreneur and knows where he is investing his money. For the uninitiated, another rebel league, the ICL, has scrapped this year’s venture owing to paucity of funds.

ICL tried to take away the sheen from cricket’s governing body and miserably failed. Yes, it did manage to sabotage ICC’s identity and hold a tourney of its own but it has all come flat within a couple of years. Already, this year’s venture has been scrapped owing to lack of funds.

Players have got to move though. If a deal is not lucrative and they deserve one, then they certainly look for greener pastures. This has made the latest turn of events quite in tune with the script.

News from the center is that most of ICL recruits are turning towards APL- another rebel league. American Premier League has been giving lucrative offers to the players and they are certainly looking for some security in these trying times. Also, most of them have either retired from international cricket or already banned from the international arena.

In such circumstances, it is only logical that they will look for their fodder elsewhere and APL has come as a timely savior. Players like Nicky Boje, Lance Klusener, Andrew Hall, Chris Harris, Adam Parore and Nathan Astle have been confirmed and reports suggest that England county stars like Graeme Hick and Adam Hollioake will cut the knife sometime soon too. This is quite in contrariety to the wish of ECB though.

John Emburey, an ICL coach is also being taken out of the ICL fold and served a lucrative contract. Jay Mir has clearly suggested that APL is a noble aim with an objective of revolutionizing cricket in America and it shall set on its task with or without the go-ahead of ICC.

American Premier League will begin on the 6th of October with the clash between Premium Pakistan and Premium Bangladesh. The tournament has been the endeavor of entrepreneur Jay Mir and he has been working ambitiously to put cricket on the American sporting graph. Presently, only a minority (the South Asian Americans) is gripped by the game fever.

ICC has already held talks with the US officials to form a tourney along the IPL lines. This shall be a way to combat the APL circus, believes ICC. The biggest cricketing body in the world has unsanctioned APL. It is widely believed that ICC has wilted under the pressure of BCCI, world’s richest cricketing body and one that makes a lot of moolah from the IPL.

Inderjit Bindra, ICC’s Principal Advisor, has a point here. He suggests that apart from regulating a venture, ICC should also look forward to a plausible alternative. Just like IPL curbed the movement of Rebel League- ICL, it is imperative for the US officials to come up with an alternative to APL too. Some such venture would be approved by ICC and fetch its assistance too.

Bindra further says that he will be discussing this theory with US officials in Dubai. Presently, Bindra is trying his best to promote cricket in USA. He feels that the American cricketing revolution is a welcome idea but it should be given a platform by ICC and shall not run erratically like a truant child.

American Premier League is getting under the hammer this October. Already a lot of discussions are taking place and recruitments for various teams are underway. Teams like Premium West Indies, Premium India, Premium Pakistan, Premium America and Premium World are already warming themselves. It might not be the “Clash Of Titans” that IPL is but it certainly packs a steady punch. Players like Martin, Gillespie, Klusener, Boje, Astle and Parore are any day going to be a handful.

Holliake and Hicks have joined the ranks of American League too. It remains to be seen if their participation is taken in the fitness of things. At the moment it is sucked with more than a pinch of salt by ECB. ECB believes that the APL is unauthorized and is running against the stipulations of ICC. ECB has always been a traditional body and it has shirked aside any plans to accept APL within its umbrella.

To give APL a little sanity, Richie Richardson is being hired as the chief recruiter. At the same time, Sir Richard Hadlee is being sought for the post of Executive Consultant. While these two names may bring much-desired credibility to the October show, it remains to be seen how far it can attract the masses. America does not know a great deal about cricket and only the South Asian contingent follows the game.

Let’s hope that cricket wins and that the county players get to prove their mettle as well.
